This is truly heartbreaking but I really wish the real Joseph was like this

Wow. This story is beautifully written, and it's amazing how you manage to capture all of the different emotions Joseph might have felt. I have never really thought about Joseph's point of view before, but I think I can understand him more now.

Please, don't ever stop writing. You have a talent, and I think you're absolutely brilliant.

Lots of L.O.V.E coming your way :)

And thank you for making us think about Michael's relationship with Joseph, Lisa or Madonna in a new light. You did such a great job!! Bravo!

You did it again, Rhythm Child!
I don't think I've ever read a story from Joseph's POV and I am glad you write one and I happy I read it. I love how you wrote all these stories from Michael's close friends/family's POV. It gives us a new insight of Michael's life and I really appreaciate that. Now the story... I think we all had in mind the image of a heartless monster who only wanted more and more money without trying to know where he is coming from. But what we can't deny is that he genuiely wanted his children to succeed and have a better life. And now take a look at Michael's career and Janet's one... We can say whatever wa want, if it wasn't for him and his (questionable) parenting, Michael wouldn't have had the same career. I don't think Joseph ever sat and gave us his version of the story but it definitely could be his. This stoy was touching and so well written! I could hear Joseph's voice and picture him in a car, on his way to visit PPB and thinking of his life and his relationship with Michael.

You did an amazing job with this story and I can't wait to read more from you. As usual, my mind is blown! You just... Lord! You always do breath taking short stories! Another favorite!
Love you!

Author's Response:

ANNIE! My trusted collegue!

I'm so glad that you like these kinds of stories, because every time i do them i'm scared I'll get flamed or start arguments between commenters. LOL. I myself had to look at the full picture of Joseph Jackson before I started this story, and I'm still reeling from the realizations I've had about him. I still disagree with physical punishment, and I think his methods had a lot of negative affects, but for all his issues I truly don't think he saw his kids as money makers for him, he saw his kids as having the chance to get out of the hellhole they were living in. Now if only they had therapy afterwords. :( He's 85 now, so i doubt he is in any position to talk about the past, not that he'd want to, but I'm sure the past is always in his mind. I honestly hope he and all the family can be at peace.

Thank you so much again for your review, xoxoxoxoxxoxoxoxoxoxoxox all those kisses are for you!

"You don't understand. You, reading this, hating me, angry at me. You probably hate that word. Hate that my father used it. You don't understand the world in the 40's for a black man. We were responsible for everything wrong with ONE of us. We were only a little better than our black women, who were the sinful pleasures of the white man. We were man dingo's or simps or samba's, but never men. We were strange fruit on trees, red grease on the ground, the first to be fired, the last to be hired. Walking down a street in the daylight was as frightening as midnight, cause no one came to our rescue either way. You heard about Emmet Till? I've seen shit worse than that. I almost got worse than that. But I kept fighting to survive."

"But Michael….he proved me wrong but he believed I was right"

" You didn't have to have ten kids on one measly paycheck in a world before Martin and Malcolm. Its called circumstance. I had HELL for my circumstance. You would have never survived that hell without me"

I know what a horrible father is. A man who doesn't love his son. My sons will tell you….my son would have told you….If I was a horrible father. I know I wasn't a Daddy. I never knew how to be a Daddy. All I know is I tried to be a good Father. You tell me if I succeeded."

You're a genius. An absolute genius. This is the best. I'm speechless.

Author's Response:

*bashful* thank you so very much. I know it's a controversial subject, Joe and Michael, and I'm really surprised by all the positive feedback.

It's crazy cause while it was hard to write from his point of view as a father, it was easy writing about him as a black man in america. just a little research on what it was like was enough to make me ill. That first paragraph you quoted came from a palce of pain that it ever had to occur. Thank you again so much for your support. :)

Amazing! Did all of this actually happen?

Author's Response:

Thanks! Joe jackso has never really spoken about his actions except that his discipline never went into "abuse." I do however know a little about the early twentieth century for blacks in America. In general, black parents have been more strict with their children due to the belief that they would need to be thick skinne to navigate the world they lived in. Trust me I understand. There were reports that Michael and his father were reconnecting at some point, although after the 2003 trial Michael completely secluded himself from most people, which may have included his family. It's sad really, that a father and son could have spent the rest of their years in peace, but instead....

I'm rambling. But thank you again for the review. :)

This was very touching and I actually shed a couple of tears. Very well written I have to say and it definitely gives me a whole new perspective about Joseph Jackson. Has me wondering about the father figure I had in my life and his way of raising my siblings and I. I can definitely relate for sure.

Author's Response:

Reactions like these are why I love to write. Your words are so touching and humbling.

I really never thought I would look at Joe in this way, but the older I get, the more I try looking at the "why's" of things. I never thought about what it must have been like having 10 black kids in a tiny house with a crappy career in PRE-Civil Rights America. And so many parents were strict with their kids. I'm not for that kind of punishment, but I can understand why tough love was such a requirement. I'd like to think maybe in the end, Michael and Joe could reach an understanding. Parents screw up many times, but if it's out of love, maybe it can be forgiven....?

Thank you so much again for your review. :)
