I gotta be blunt here, I think Maria's being really dramatic with her mom.
Her mother is stating normal fears for her child. MJ did have issues with fans and paparazzi hounding him, media pressing in on him, it's stressufl as fuck, and considering how they met--through a fan letter--I get her initial protest. It's not a case of, "I don't want you to be happy, I want to control you," it's a case of, "my daughter is young and entering a world that she's not prepared for because of a fan letter...after such a short time of meeting him...is this the right desicion?"
There's giving your kid some freedom and then there's just not caring what she does. The mother prolly cares what she does and the consequences, and being OLDER, she probably haas a diferent perspective. She's not even being MEAN about it, comapred to the other parent, she's WONDERFUL! She's doing what my mother did and still does when she's concerned--she's making points so that Maria CONSIDERS EVERYTHING. Jesus Christ, child, get it together!

I know that. :) But imagine any teenager 'in love'. I think I would have reacted the same way if my parents had gone against me and any boyfriend of mine.
Maria is merely trying to protect what she's found, and now that she has three adults going against her, she's overly defensive about it. Both Maria and Michael are still young and naive, and everything seems like they've got it under control, that nothing can get in between them.
But there's many ups and downs to come, which will test their relationship. ;)
