how about slash stories. Those seem to scare me

Author's Response:

Hmm. I don't know how I would address that one to be honest. I get why some people like them and I don't think they are a travesty to FF. I think the same rules apply to them as to straight fic. At the same time, they are not my cup of tea.

Ahhh pet peeves. This doesn't pertain to writing lol but it still bothers me a bit. Whenever the banner contains a picture that's supposed to be Michael but is an impersonator. There is one in particular I keep seeing lol. I never even look into those stories on that alone. Also another is when Michael is portrayed as completely helpless. I know Michael was a very sensitive person but he was incredibly strong as well. Stronger than most to be honest with what he had to deal with. But when he's constantly falling apart and being a complete diva about it. Eg. "Why are you staring at me?  Omg you don't like how I look." *falls apart and locks self in bathroom for days* That kind of gets to me.

Working through writers block is a good one.

Here is a topic that hasn't been done ---Sex scenes. How to write a good one without being contrite. . I know it's not your favorite part of the story to engage in but it can make a good topic maybe?

I'll come back if I think of anything else. <333

Author's Response:

I want to know the name. I know a forum that uses a heading with a fake MJ pic. It would get to me more if they didn't have some great stories on there.

Ok, helpless Michael. I agree with you regarding his strength. He had his weak moments where he shattered glass and hid out, but those weren't his norm. Subtopic noted :)

Ooh. How do I keep forgetting sex scenes? That's a huge issue. I do enjoy sex scenes and all of my favorite stories have them.  I also think that they need to be carefully addressed. E.g not a story of simply sex scenes, don't skirt around the language, dont' rely on them to establish a connection between Michael and the OG, etc.

Thanks, girl :)

With Michael's character, basically knowing which line to cross when someone is writing an AU, AR, or just a regular fic that doesn't change anything but expands on something that wasn't fully addressed like what tends to be in poetry..as far as OOC goes for me it depends on in what way he is out of character if it's something I thought it would be funny for him to do I wouldn't mind it..my pet peeves are bashing fics as well as regular Michael doing things that was totally against his character in real life for no logical reason (when I say reason I mean what made him that way..you know, part of the character development process)and no disclaimer added such as parody, spoof fic, AU or if it is inspired by a short film. Also dislike the lack of research where people would get certain details about Michael wrong that could easily be looked up

Writer's block what I basically do is take a break from it for a bit and reread to try and wake up my muse..

but you pretty much covered what to discuss

Author's Response:

Hmm. Okay, I'm starting to see a way to narrow this down (thank you).

-OOC and AU (subheadings pertaining to: readers' limits on going OOC, keeping it consistent, power of disclaimers....)

-Canon and w/in character (subheadings pertaining to: know the man, know what you don't know, stop the glorification....)

Writing Michael's character is a good one but a broad one too. My only pet peeve, well its not really a pet peeve its just I see it sooo much is the perfect walking talking sex god Michael. Give him flaws he can't possibly be perfect in every aspect. Give him problems to face, etc...

Another one... I'm not sure if you touched on this already, I don't remember but FORMATTING!! I know we talked about spelling, grammar, word count, etc... but formatting... If I open a story and its one big block of words. I stop right there. It doesn't matter if its good quality writing or whatever... I can't.

Author's Response:

The eff.. how did I miss that?! You are so right about formatting. My other pet peeve is when more than half of the text is on the left side of the page. Yes, a lot of times people say short lines of back and forth, but if most of the dialogue is like that, it's because the exchanges are superficial (and possibly, artificial).

Yeah, Michael's character is a broad topic. I really want to narrow that topic down.

Redone: The Visual Documentary is a book  written by Adrian Grant. Michael approved of his work, ane he was insider so to speak.   You may also want to consider other books as well. For example: For the Record by Chris Cadman, and The Maestro also written by Chris Cadman.  They highly reputable in the MJ World. Adrian Grant has met Michael on several occasions, and Michael had given all access to pass to his album recordings, as well as behind the scenes of Ghosts-( Michael Jackson short film) Adrian Grant also published fanzine called OFF THE Wall and he founded the Mcihael Jackson World Network. He is a great guy. Chris Cadman and Adrian Grant are both British. Chris Cadman is very reputable and very kind. He donated a few books to me to be used as raffle and door prizes at two MJ events I organized. I have met Adrian Grant a few times, as well.  So I highly recommend him and his works.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the info. I will definitely look into those.

redone, sorry about that other comment, I was half awake at the time. Are there any good Youtube videos to watch about MJ's life

Author's Response:

Not that I'm aware of. Clips aren't the best sources of in depth information. Sound bytes are what got him into trouble :/

J Telllieborelli is an awful source of info for Michael. He was a marginal character in Michael's life at best. I would hestate to describe their relationship as friends. I don't think he was a friend. Those other books are great. Michael Bush tells cute stories of their travels. Love love love!! The Casico's book as you said with some hesitance but it had some great stuff in it too. The sites are awesome!!!

Author's Response:

Glad my recs passed your muster :)

J randy is not a good reliable source..-you have to read his book with a grain of salt....In my opinion he is somewhat of a gossip queen.. Although he has never "disrespected" Michael.. He gets a few points for that but I don't his work seriously...

Author's Response:

Agreed. He's not nearly as bad as Stacy (insert several expletives) Brown, but he wrote stuff that Michael didn't want him writing. Which makes me wonder if it was dishonest or just a betrayal by a friend. Either way, it wasn't cool.

would the J.Randy Taraborellli book work?

Author's Response:

I'd hesitate on that one. He lacks integrity in many aspects of his writing.

VindicateMJ is one of my favorites! Plus the positive books written on him as well as his own and talking to some of the bodyguards (Bill Whitfield, Javon, Mike) also help me out..also use his interviews as a resource too.

Author's Response:

His interviews are a gold mine. I need to read their book. I will likely add to the chapter (and bump it in doing so, b/c I'm changing it - if that's okay with you guys?), to add a few books I have that I forgot to mention.

I think I'm a pretty consistent poster...? I put the question mark because im not sure what length of time is considered consistent between posts. Lol

I make it my business to reply to my reviews. I feel if they take the time to drop a few lines it's only right to acknowledge them in some way. I know not everyone will have the time to do this but it's just something I do personally.

I'm willing to take on any kind of review. Flames and all. If you're strongly grounded in your story and have a reason for how it's going then you should be able to explain it to your readers. This is how you know a reader is really paying attention when they point things out. I've seen it done quite rudely at times. It's all about tact.

I always put "rate and review I want to here your thoughts" in the end notes of my story. I dont know if that counts as pandering or not. It's really not meant to be. I've mentioned once when I saw a few people stopped reviewing and it was out of curiosity that I asked. Know that I've been here longer I've come to see that it's the nature of posting here. Sometimes people just stop reviewing and that's ok. As for holding stories hostage I've seen that as well and it baffles me. I personally write for my love of writing so I don't understand why people would do that. The story itself should be enough of an insentive for people to keep coming back.

The take home message is definitely on point!! Great post!!

More soon <333

Author's Response:

You are ;) I think regular is when a person does it on a reasonably consistent schedule. Ideally less than a month. I believe one of the most consistent is Enola Lee. She's got a schedule posted and everything.

Responding to reviewers doesn't need to take a lot of time. One could easily post a quick thank you. Are personalized ones the best? YES. That's how I became a huge fan of Annie's. Her stories are the ones that got me reviewing, but her responses are what made me a regular reviewer in general.

LOL. I remember when you said that. I posted to say why, b/c I'm a bit quirky....I feel guilty when I stop commenting on anything and do try to provide warnings ahead of time and/or follow up.  I don't like leaving writers wondering why.

You don't pander for reviews. A "Rate and Review, Please" or "I love reading your comments" is totally fine.

Thanks, girl :)
