I’m still impressed with your quality of writing, and it’s some of the best I’ve seen on this site. You did an amazing job with grey morality (a theme in your previous works that I notice you’re skilled in representing) and characterization. Michael, especially, was incredibly spot-on, even with the traits of his you did tweak. (I even started making some traditionally-drawn fanart. If I finish, I’ll figure out how to get it to you!)
Nevertheless, I do have some small complaints. I have no qualms with a character like Eve existing, but I’d really rather she’d have been a white woman. Making a white woman the main villain would have been an interesting commentary about black/white and male/female victimhood, which I felt like you tried to imply, but the fact that she (and her co-conspirator Tony) are people of color just comes off as a little racist. I don’t like that Mrs. Tarantula pulls the “sassy Mexican housekeeper that speaks little English†trope, either. (Disclaimer: I’m white, and this is the sort of the stuff I’ve had to learn to keep out of my writing, too. And I’m not calling you an evil or bad person. It’s a matter of unlearning what a toxic society has taught us, and representing a diversity of personalities, of all races, rather than the same cookie-cutter stereotypes each time.)
But you still did an amazing job with writing, characterization, and creating an appropriate sense of mystery. Honestly, I was so impressed by how well you kept the audience guessing about Michael’s condition and January’s identity without losing any sense of excitement. I read Kind Of Like Faith before this, and I’m confident in saying that you’re one of the best writers in this fandom. I’d love to see you improve more as a writer.
