Latoya Jackson jumped up, exasperated. “Grab a rock.”

“What?”

“Grab a rock!”

Lekerol Simmons climbed to her feet, glowering daggers at Latoya’s back. Who in the hell is she to tell me what to do?

“What could a rock solve, Latoya?” She said the name with a sneer. “Nothing. It would only cause more problems. Problems like,  oh I don't know, an expensive window broken into a thousand pieces, a blaring alarm that none of us has the code to, which leaves me to point out the impending arrival of the police--”

“Okay! So? We could explain it to them later. She needs help now!”

Angela Thomas decided it was time for her to intervene. “Leki you need to chill out!” Lekerol continued speaking as if Angela still sat saying nothing.

“No, Latoya,” she continued in an accusatory voice, “if Olivia was able to speak for herself right now she wouldn’t want the police involved. That would only cause more unwanted publicity. More stress! All of which is your family’s damn fault! If she’d never met any of you crazy people she wouldn’t be dealing with all of this!”

“Listen, Lekerol.” Latoya quipped, sterner than she had been before. “I know that what my family tried to do to her and Michael was unfair. This whole situation is terrible for everyone involved. But you can not push the blame solely on my family. We only wanted what was best for Michael. I love Olivia. She is my daughter. I—I can’t believe this has happened.” Latoya’s voice was raw with emotion. She clutched at her chest, trying to stave off the stabbing pain in her heart that threatened to incapacitate her like it had earlier that day. Lekerol saw the effort on Latoya’s face and felt even more enraged. She didn’t believe Latoya’s claim. She felt it was all show.

“You can save your little crocodile tears for someone who believes them.” Lekerol scorned. She advanced upon Latoya pointing at her with a condemning finger. “I don’t want you here. You shouldn’t even be here! If you had one once of sincerity in your words you wouldn’t be! You piece of--”

“Leki!” Angela tried again. “Stop. This is not Latoya’s fault. It’s nobody’s. We—”

“It’s somebody’s!” She turned her anger toward Angela.

“Well we don’t know who. We don’t know how Michael died. We just need to come up with a plan now and figure out how to help our friend. Latoya is here because she cares about Olivia too. Let her help us!”

As Angela spoke, the three girls became aware of a faraway sputtering sound. The trio knew the noise too well. It was the sounds of four engine-powered steel blades whipping through the air. The sound crescendo-ed until a news helicopter high above flew past them. All three girls exchanged defeated glances, knowing the helicopter’s appearance was no coincidence. They had been tipped off and were now circling the compound to catch footage of “Michael Jackson’s mysterious girlfriend”.
